About us

Building on a project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy through the Inclusive Energy Innovation Prize, Bethesda Green, Global Urban Development (GUD), Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC) and One Montgomery Green will work to strengthen economic development efforts and climate resilience and promote innovation in a diverse urban community through the creation of a Sustainable Innovation Zone.

Through extensive community engagement, project partners will apply the international lessons of sustainable innovation to the curated needs of an underserved community, creating a model for similar communities in the County, State, and Nation.

OUR PARTNERS

  • Bethesda Green, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2008, works to address environmental challenges locally by creating a sustainable, green community, built collaboratively through citizen engagement, environmental education, government partnership and innovative business development.

  • Global Urban Development (GUD), founded in 2001, is a non-profit international policy organization and professional network of more than 700 leaders and experts in 60 countries, committed to enabling everyone in the world to live and thrive in peace with each other and in peace with nature. GUD participates in many global partnerships with the UN, World Bank, and other international organizations to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, Paris Climate Agreement, and New Urban Agenda by 2030. In addition, GUD specializes in designing innovative, sustainable, and inclusive economic growth and development strategies for cities, counties, regions, states, and provinces in many countries, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Germany, India, Italy, Morocco, Panama, Poland, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, UAE, UK, and US, by applying GUD's strategic policy and action framework called Metropolitan Economic Strategy, Sustainable Innovation, and Inclusive Prosperity. GUD’s “getting richer by becoming greener” economic strategy framework includes the Four Greens: Green Savings, Green Opportunities, Green Talent, and Green Places.

GUD’s key recent global initiative is Sustainable Innovation Zones, including the Porto Alegre Sustainable Innovation Zone (ZISPOA) in Brazil, and the Santo Angelo Sustainable Innovation Zone (ZISSAN) in Brazil, both implementing GUD’s 2015 World Bank-funded Leapfrog Economic Strategy for the State of Rio Grande do Sul to become the most sustainable and innovative place in Latin America by 2030; the Wheaton Sustainable Innovation Zone (WSIZ) in Montgomery County, Maryland near Washington, DC, led by the Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation, One Montgomery Green, and Bethesda Green, with funding from the US Department of Energy’s Inclusive Energy Innovation Prize; the Poznan Sustainable Innovation Zone (EDIT Poznan) in Poland, led by the Poznan University of Technology and Adam Mickiewicz University; the Penrith Sustainable Innovation Community (PSIC) in Australia, led by Western Sydney University; and the Panama City Sustainable Innovation Zone (ACTA) in Panama; with many more Sustainable Innovation Zones being organized worldwide over the coming decade.

  • The Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization created by County legislation in 2015 to promote economic growth in Montgomery County, Maryland. As a public-private partnership and the economic development entity of Montgomery County, MCEDC is in a unique position to leverage our operational and organizational nimbleness and deep industry, government, and community relationships to adapt to a rapidly changing economic landscape and support the Wheaton Sustainable Innovation Zone.

MCEDC strives to lead the implementation of Montgomery County’s 2021-2025 Economic Development Strategic Plan, which reflects priorities outlined in Montgomery County’s 2021 aggressive Climate Action Plan. Overriding principles of the strategic plan include working to grow an inclusive and equitable economy by focusing on innovation, developing healthy local business environments, advancing career pathways and talent pipelines, providing attractive amenities to residents, collaborating and building relationships to build civic and social capital, and diversifying our economy to strengthen our resilience to global shocks, including but not limited to the challenges presented by climate change.

  • One Montgomery Green (OMG), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, works to catalyze the County's transition to a sustainable economy, facilitate environmental responsibility among businesses, residents, and government, and increase the quality of life for all Montgomery County residents.
